For model year 2014, Polaris decided to shelve the aging 500cc engine and upgrade it with its new ProStar 570 engine featuring dual overhead cams and Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI). Latest From ATV Rider Powered By Sourced from Polaris’ Ranger and RZR lineup, the ProStar 570 powerplant has given the flagship Sportsman a new lease on life with a claimed 20 percent power increase, delivering 44 hp to the rear wheels. Meanwhile, with a 13 percent increase in fuel capacity paired with the ProStar’s more efficient fuel-injected engine, a longer range makes the Sportsman 570 an excellent budget-priced machine for long trail rides. Performance from the ProStar is noticeably improved over the old 500. The engine makes great power all across the rpm range and easily has the torque to float the front tires on a machine that crosses the scales north of 700 pounds. A CVT transmission effortlessly puts power to the ground to both the front and rear wheels through Polaris’ selectable On-Demand True All Wheel Drive system. The all-wheel drive system works very well and, when engaged, transfers power to the front wheels when rear wheel slippage is detected. Driveline noise on the Sportsman 570 was noticeably louder than other Polaris models but never seemed to affect performance. Absent on models we rode is electronic engine braking. Viewing this as a safety enhancement, we have our fingers crossed that Polaris makes this available as standard equipment on all models soon. New this year to the nearly-20-year-old midsize Sportsman chassis is Electronic Power Steering (EPS). The variable rate EPS provides more steering effort at lower speeds, while dialing the assist back when the speeds increase. The EPS was a welcome addition to this chassis, making steering effort much less than previous models and definitely springing new life into the chassis. The EPS was especially noticeable while rock crawling at Patton, Pennsylvania’s Rock Run Recreation Area. EPS is phenomenal and has surely spoiled aficionados like myself who now no longer like to ride ATVs without it. At low speeds, the EPS helps the Sportsman overcome its girth and weight and made crawling through the rocks a blast! The new Sportsman not only has more grunt, but it’s also more comfortable and rocks new creature comforts as well. For years, annoying editors like myself complained about Polaris’ all-plastic racks that tended to tweak when a heavy load was tied down. Polaris answered this complaint and delivered new steel-framed Lock & Ride racks that should be a great improvement. The Sportsman 570 engine and transmission is narrower, thus allowing the floorboards to be longer and wider, making the riding experience more comfortable and pleasant than the previous-generation Sportsman 500. Finally, to help run power-robbing accessories like winches and additional lighting, the stator on the Sportsman now produces 40 percent more wattage. There is absolutely no question the new 2014 Polaris Sportsman 570 EPS is a huge improvement over its genetic brethren. It’s more comfortable, more powerful, has more range, is more efficient, has available EPS, and has more electrical power to run accessories than any midsize Sportsman ever. At the end of the day, those features alone make it easier for dealerships to sell this machine in the ultra-popular budget-priced midsize market.
