By the second half of the seventeenth century redware was being produced from local clays and Redware items were made that were familiar in form, from their country of heritage, being that of French, English, Dutch or German. Redware production continued well into the mid nineteenth century and production had spread throughout the eastern seaboard, large cities to rural America, even though other materials such as stoneware, tin and glass were being produced. Redware declined in popularity by the 1880s due to the competition of mass produced goods. We are pleased to offer this outstanding huge redware folk art fish design food mold from New England circa 1800s for your consideration. The red ware fish food mold has a rich dark pumpkin color glaze on the inside and rim of the food mold. Notice how the pumpkin glaze was dripped over the rim on the antique fish mold making striped markings on the outer surface. The outer surface of the fish mold has a natural earthen darkened patina from use and age. The fish design is detailed and artistic in form. The exceptionally large redware fish mold stands upon raised tripod legs. There is a beautiful strong old wired hanger that has been secured to one of the tripod legs for hanging (see photo). The large antique fish mold has a slight hairline on the inside mold near the head of the fish. The hairline is very faint on the back side of the mold from age and use. This does not diminish the integrity, strength or character of this beautiful rare exceptionally large fish mold but just adds to its authenticity. The antique large redware fish food mold is in excellent condition with an age appropriate patina. MEASUREMENTS: 18 inches long, 6 ½ inches wide, and 4 inches high.
